What Is a Dental Cone Beam CT?

In this video, Dr. Diane Hines talks about why CBCT scans are an important tool for comprehensive dental care beyond just implants.

A CBCT scan is a three-dimensional dental X-ray that provides a highly detailed view of your oral and facial structures. It gives us valuable information about your teeth, jawbone, sinuses, TMJ joints, and even the vertebrae in your neck. This level of detail helps us detect issues such as bone density, joint wear from grinding, sinus concerns, and other conditions that may affect your oral health.

When a CBCT scan is taken, I send it to a radiologist for review. I cover this cost personally because I believe it’s important for patients to receive a written report from a specialist. If the radiologist identifies an urgent issue, we will contact you immediately to discuss the findings. Otherwise, we’ll review the results together at your next visit.

Although CBCT imaging was once used mainly for planning dental implant procedures, it has become a valuable tool for evaluating overall oral health. For this reason, I recommend that patients have a CBCT scan every two years. It allows us to identify potential problems early and ensure you receive the most accurate, comprehensive care possible.
