Signs of Tooth Infections and What To Do About Them
In this video, Dr. Diane Hines explains how to recognize the warning signs of gum disease and why regular checkups are so important.
You can often tell if a tooth is infected if you develop an abscess, which appears as a bump on the gums, or if you experience swelling. However, with gum disease (periodontal disease), the infection may go unnoticed for years because it progresses slowly. Over time, it can lead to bone loss and the formation of deep pockets around the teeth, often five or six millimeters or more.
Common warning signs include shifting teeth, a persistent bad taste in the mouth, swollen or puffy gums, and discharge from the gums. These symptoms indicate advanced disease and the need for professional care.
That’s why it’s important to see your dentist at least every six months for an exam and cleaning. In some cases, more frequent visits every four months may be recommended. Our primary goal is to detect problems early and provide the care you need to maintain healthy teeth for a lifetime.
