In this video, Dr. Diane Hines explains how periodontal disease is measured and why early detection is so important.
Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that causes bone loss around the teeth.
During an exam, we measure the depth of the spaces between your teeth and gums using a small probe:
Healthy gums usually measure 3 millimeters or less.
Mild periodontal disease may show pockets of 4–5 millimeters.
Moderate disease typically measures 6–7 millimeters.
Advanced disease can lead to severe bone loss and, if untreated, may result in tooth loss. Early detection and treatment are key to stopping the progression of periodontal disease and protecting your smile.

Dental implants are titanium screws that we use to replace missing tooth roots. When you lose teeth, you lose the roots responsible for stimulating your jawbone. A gap in your smile affects more than just your appearance. Over time, missing teeth may affect your ability to eat and speak clearly, as well as the quality of your jawbone. Because natural teeth have roots that stimulate your bone, losing teeth causes your jaw to go unstimulated. Gradually, your jawbone will resorb, or lose mass and volume, [...]
