What Is Periodontal Disease?
In this video, Dr. Diane Hines explains how periodontal disease is measured and why early detection is so important.
Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that causes bone loss around the teeth.
During an exam, we measure the depth of the spaces between your teeth and gums using a small probe:
- Healthy gums usually measure 3 millimeters or less.
- Mild periodontal disease may show pockets of 4–5 millimeters.
- Moderate disease typically measures 6–7 millimeters.
Advanced disease can lead to severe bone loss and, if untreated, may result in tooth loss. Early detection and treatment are key to stopping the progression of periodontal disease and protecting your smile.
